[17/11/2011] A New Start for Chew Medical Practice
The long–awaited new surgery for Chew Medical Practice will open for business on Monday 27 February 2012, when the vision will finally become reality.
Patients are already commenting on the attractive cedar-wood cladding on the outside of the building, while staff and doctors who have been able to go inside are thrilled by the amount of space. Visitors will be welcomed into a bright and airy waiting area, lit by an impressive skylight and about twice the size of the current waiting room. There will be handy toilets and a new system for doctors to call patients. The clinical spaces have been designed with hygiene and patient comfort as priorities. The nurses’ rooms will be much bigger, with carefully thought-out storage and easy access to all the facilities that the nurses need. There will be ten doctors’ consulting rooms compared with the current six, making it much easier to bring in visiting specialists. There will be dedicated rooms for the treatment of leg and foot problems and for counselling and advice services.
As now, prescriptions will be dispensed on site. Patients will be able to go into the dispensary to collect repeat medication or to wait for drugs prescribed on the day. It will feel similar to visiting a pharmacy, with a proper shop counter, and prescriptions will be handed out by experienced and knowledgeable dispensary staff. This will separate prescription enquiries from the main reception desk, and should greatly improve the whole experience of visiting the surgery.
The start of 2012 will also herald a return to stability amongst the doctors and nurses at the surgery. 2011 has been a very challenging year when the surgery has relied heavily on locum doctors to keep appointments available. The new permanent doctors are already developing their own loyal followings amongst patients, relieving the pressure on the longer-standing doctors. The full line-up now looks like this:
Partners: Drs Sandra Fenn (senior partner), Wendy Morris and Tim Sephton
Salaried GPs: Drs Vanessa Wilkins, Claire Wilkins, Nick Alexander, Priscilla Norgren and Chris Tasker
Nurses: Becky Wych, Lynn Hutton, Fiona Bowden
Health Care Assistants: Anne Yeates, Emma Carter
All doctors are able to manage the full range of conditions at a primary care level. They don’t specialise, because many patients suffer from more than one condition and it is important that all doctors maintain their level of familiarity with the whole breadth of complaints. Patients are free to choose which doctor they see for routine appointments.
Once the new surgery opens, there will be opportunities for patients to visit the building and to meet the new doctors informally. Look out for more information about launch events next Spring.
[07/11/2011] Dr. Chris Tasker introduces himself
"Having completed my medical training in Nottingham in 2005, I worked in both North Devon District Hospital and Nottingham City Hospital for 2 years before deciding on a career in General Practice. I moved to Bath in 2007 and commenced my GP training which involved work in a number of hospitals in the region. Prior to my move to Chew Medical Practice, I have worked as a GP in both Somerset and Wiltshire. Within General Practice, I have a keen interest in both musculoskeletal medicine and paediatrics."
"My wife, Janaki, and I were married last year and live in Bath. I share an allotment with our neighbour and I am rapidly becoming an enthusiastic, though novice, vegetable grower and gardener. I am a supporter of Bath Rugby and a keen amateur photographer."
[18/08/2011] Seasonal "Flu Jab" Winter 2011/12
The 2011/12 seasonal flu immunisation programme will soon be underway.
During early September, patients aged 65 and over will be receiving a letter from the Health Authority inviting them to contact the Practice to make an appointment for their “flu jab”.
A number of patients outside this age group who are in an “at risk” group or who are carers etc. will also be offered the opportunity of the flu jab. These patients will be receiving a letter direct from Chew Medical Practice. If you are concerned that you should receive the flu jab but have not received a letter in September, please contact the Practice to discuss your concerns.
Our Flu Jab Clinics at the Practice are due to start mid-September .
For more information regarding seasonal flu and the flu jab please visit the to the NHS web site at:- http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Flu-jab/Pages/Introduction.aspx
[11.08.2011] Changes to the GP team
It is with mixed feelings that we are going to be saying goodbye to Dr. Neil Robertson in the near future. He will be greatly missed by patients and colleagues alike - but we are also pleased to congratulate him as he is leaving us to take up a partnership at a practice in Fishponds, Bristol. At the same time we are pleased to announce the arrival of two new members to the GP team here at Chew Medical Practice.
Dr. Nick Alexander joined us in August. Having qualified from Bristol University in 2006 he stayed in the area and has worked in Bristol, Swindon, Gloucester and Cheltenham before completing his training in Dursley, Gloucestershire. He enjoys the variety of General Practice but has a particular interest in teaching and palliative care. Outside of work he loves his sport and is looking forward to playing against Chew Valley at rugby again this season but may keep his own team secret for the time being!
In October, we will also see the arrival of Dr. Chris Tasker and we will let you know more about him in due course.
Dr. Priscilla Norgren joins GP team
Dr. Norgren joined the GP team in July 2011. Before joining us she worked at Rush Hill/Weston Surgery in Bath where she had been since October 2003. As well as her time as a GP she has also worked in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, retaining a keen interest in womens health, and has extensive experience in contraception. She also continues her work at a young people's CASH (contraception and sexual health) clinic at Riverside in Bath.
URGENT MESSAGE ABOUT MEASLES
April 2011- The Health Protection Agency has notified the Practice that there has been a recent confirmed case of Measles in the local area and other suspected cases are under investigation.
If you/your child are aged between 5 and 19 and have NOT had 2 MMR vaccine injections please contact the surgery to make an appointment for a catch-up. If you/your child have had the single separate vaccines you should book an appointment to discuss your situation with the nurse.
If you are in any doubt about which vaccines you have had, please check with the surgery.
